The Arla history dates back to 1881 when the first dairies in Denmark and Sweden were founded.
Over the years many more co-operative daires were founded. After The Second World War there was 1,650 dairies in Denmark only and the number kept growing until the 1960's when the first ideas of creating nation wide dairies was suggested. From then on mergers and acquisitions among dairies was part of the daily life in both Denmark and Sweden.
In year 2000 the Danish MD Foods and the Swedish Arla ekonomisk Förening decided to merge. This was the first large cross national merger in the Nordic dairy industry - only to see many more come after.

2004 Arla acquired National Cheese Company in Canada, and become a producer and distributor of cheese in all Canada.
2005 Arla and the Chinese dairy company China Mengniu Company started a partnership in producing milk powder for the Chinese market.

2007 Merger between Arla and Express Dairies in the UK. The merger creates the UK's leading supplier of dairy products under the name of Arla Foods UK plc.

2009 Arla bought the Dutch dairy Friesland Fresh Foods in Nijkerk, changing it's name to Arla Foods BV.
2010 Shareholders of Westbury Dairies Ltd announced joint venture with Arla Foods UK plc.
2011 Merger between Arla and Hansa-Milch eG from Germany, 670 active German farmers became cooperative owners of Arla Foods a.m.b.a.
2011 EU’s competition authorities gave the go-ahead for Arla Foods’ acquisition of Allgäuland-Käsereien in Southern Germany.
2012 Arla merged with the German dairy company Milch-union Hocheifel MUH, and British Milk Link. The mergers meant that Arla Foods grew from 8,024 co-operative owners in Denmark, Sweden and Germany to 12,300 co-operative owners in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the UK.
2012 Arla signed agreements with China’s leading dairy company China Mengniu Dairy Company Ltd. and with the leading food and beverage company in China, COFCO Corporation.

Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc (FMN) was incorporated on 29th September, 1960 as a private limited liability company with a modest paid-up share capital of N1 million and converted to a public company in November, 1978. The beneficial interest in the company’s equity is held by Nigerian and Overseas shareholders. Presently, two foreign shareholders own about 56% of the company’s paid-up share capital. The balance is held by over 75,000 individuals and institutional investors.
Wheat milling forms the financial backbone of our diversified company. FMN pioneered flour milling in Nigeria when its first mill was commissioned at Apapa in 1962 with a grinding capacity of 500 metric tonnes of wheat per day. Today, the Apapa milling complex has a rated capacity of over 8,000 metric tons per day making it one of the largest single site mills in the world. All the mills are manned by a team of highly trained and skilled professionals working at a high level of efficiency attested to by our ISO 9001:2008 accreditation recognizing that our flour manufacturing facilities are world class and operate within an internationally recognized Quality System. FMN had over the years made huge investments in milling technology and human capital to sustain its pre-eminent position and maintain its competitive advantage in the Nigerian flour milling industry.
In its over five-decade history, FMN’s flagship food brand, “Golden Penny”, continues to be one of the best known and the preferred brand amongst bakers, confectioneries and consumers in Nigeria. The “Golden Penny” basket of foods has now grown to include products such as semovita, masavita, pasta, noodles, refined sugar, margarine, vegetable oils, and a range of snacks and breakfast cereals, instantly recognizable in any Nigerian household.
FMN’s first investment outside Flour Milling was in BAGCO in 1978. BAGCO now a Division of FMN is a pace setter in woven polypropylene sack manufacturing. With its two giant plants at Lagos and Kano, it is by far the largest and supplier of choice to many industrial and agro-allied companies in Nigeria in the packaging of flour, cement, grains, salt, detergent, fertilizer, merchandise, farm harvests, shopping, etc. The BAGCO brand which has succeeded in gaining international recognition has also entered the export market with some of its polymer bags going to the African Continent and as far as the United States of America.
Another significant milestone was the company’s foray into Cement. The company operated a large cement terminal at Apapa and marketed its cement under “Burham Cement” brand, renowned for high quality and consistency. The cement terminal had a handling capacity of 10,000 metric tonnes of cement per day. In line with Federal Government’s backward integration policy, Flour Mills invested in the United Cement Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (UNICEM) Calabar, in 2002. UNICEM operates a green field, fully integrated cement plant, with a capacity of 2.5 million metric tonnes of cement per annum. In 2015, a strategic decision was made to dispose of the investment in UNICEM and refocus the group as a publicly traded, Food and Agro-Allied company that strives to use locally sourced materials to develop and produce unique consumer products for the local markets.
Beyond wheat based products, FMN Group’s strategic imperative in the years ahead is to create value in the supply chain and reduce dependence on imported raw materials. To this end, FMN has recently invested billions of Naira in its agro-allied ventures. The Group’s strategic diversification into agribusiness began in 1978 with the investment in a 10,000ha Kaboji Farm, which is close to the town of Kontagora in Niger State. We have subsequently made many other significant investments in primary processing of locally grown soybean, palm fruit, cassava, maize, and sugar cane; storage, aggregation and distribution of locally sourced grains and export commodities; manufacture, and distribution of agro-inputs, such as seeds and fertilizers. These strategic investments across the major crop value chains are setting the pace for others to follow and continue to strengthen our position as Nigeria’s Premier Food and Agro-Allied Company.

Guinness Nigeria Plc, a public limited liability company quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange was incorporated 29 April 1950 as a trading company importing Guinness Stout from Dublin. The Company has since transformed into a manufacturing operation and its principal activities continue to be brewing, packaging, marketing and selling of Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, Guinness Extra Smooth, Malta Guinness, Malta Guinness Herbs Lite, Harp Lager, Smirnoff Ice, Satzenbrau Lager, Dubic Malt, Snapp, Master’s Choice, Orijin Spirit Mixed Drink, Orijin Bitters, Smirnoff Ice Double Black with Guarana, Guinness Africa Special, Orijin Zero, Tappers and Royal Kingdom Lager.
Following the approval of the Board of Directors (the Board), Guinness Nigeria Plc acquired the rights to import, market, distribute and sell in Nigeria the International Premium Spirit brands of Diageo plc (“Diageo”), its parent company with effect from 1st January 2016. The Company now has exclusive distribution rights to Diageo’s iconic brands in Nigeria including Baileys, Smirnoff, Gordon's, Captain Morgan, Tanqueray, Ciroc and the Johnnie Walker range. Guinness Nigeria Plc installed Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) production lines and commenced production and sale of products in PET format in the 2018 financial year. It currently produces Malta Guinness, Orijin Zero and Dubic Malt in PET formats.
Guinness Nigeria Plc also acquired the right to manufacture locally some of the most successful mainstream spirits brands in Nigeria that are part of Diageo brands including Smirnoff Vodka and Gordon's Gin. Our relationship with Diageo has also enabled us acquire the right to import, market, sell as well as the right to produce locally MrDowell’s and Royal Challenge whiskey in Nigeria. Guinness Nigeria has a rich heritage that stretches back almost two centuries.
Guinness Nigeria Plc is home of the first Guinness brewery outside of the British Isles. The first bottle of Guinness Foreign Extra Stout in Nigeria was brewed on the 30th of November 1963, three years after Nigeria’s independence - opening up opportunities for the overseas Guinness Foreign Extra Stout brewing in other parts of the world. Two years later, in 1965, Guinness Nigeria was listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. We are proud to be the world's second-largest market for Guinness, and a major part of the inspiring long history of brand Guinness.
Steady growth in markets for Guinness Stout and Harp Lager during the next 30 years prompted the building of three more major breweries in Nigeria. In 1974, the company built a second brewery in Benin, where it produced Harp lager beer. This facility was later expanded to accommodate a second stout brewery, commissioned in 1978. In 1982, a fourth Guinness brewery was built in Ogba, Lagos to brew Harp Premium Lager beer. This site too, was expanded to include Guinness Stout. In 2011, the Benin and Ogba breweries were expanded to further increase capacity and meet the growing demand for Guinness Nigeria products which include the acclaimed brands: Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, Guinness Extra Smooth, Malta Guinness, and Harp Lager beer. He switched from a trader to become a manufacturer of brand new motorcycles in Nigeria through Innoson Nigeria Limited crashing the market price from N150,000 to N70,000. The Innoson brand of motorcycles maintained the same quality as the foreign imported new ones, but sold for less, even cheaper than the foreign-used. This audacious move of his till today is responsible for the eradication of foreign-used [tokunbo] motorcycles in Nigeria!
Backed by this unprecedented success in the history of Nigeria, the Innoson group launched further into industrial manufacturing through technology transfer. 38 Years after our founder started this remarkable journey, today, with over 7400 Nigerian workers, the Innoson group is still marching forward ever stronger!

In the beginning….
The year was 1978; a commercial town situated in the Eastern part of Nigeria, called Nnewi was the central hub for motorcycle importation. As it is today for tokunbo (foreign used) cars, so it was then for tokunbo motorcycles, they were the status quo.
By 1987, a brand new motorcycle sold for N150,000 and a tokunbo one sold for N100,000 – N90,000. Things would have continued this way to this day, but for the intervention of a 25 years old Nigerian, named Innocent Chukwuma, the founder of Innoson Motors (IVM).
Driven by his passion for people and his core business philosophy of bringing down costs and passing the gain to customers, he pioneered the first Made-in-Nigeria Motorcycle brand that sold for as low as N60,000. By year 2002, he had successfully driven out tokunbo (foreign used) motorcycles out of Nigeria forever!
We are manufacturing durable and affordable brand new automobiles for Africans. Our brand new automobiles are selling for almost the cost of their tokunbo equivalents. And they are as good as any foreign automobile brand you know.
The statistics are alarming, according to a recent research by PricewatershouseCoopers (PwC), the ratio of brand new automobiles to foreign used ones on Nigerian road is 1 : 131. Meaning that for every brand new car bought, there are 131 tokunbo ones!

International Breweries Plc was incorporated in December 1971 by its founder and first Chairman, Dr. Lawrence Omole under the name International Breweries Limited. The Company commenced production of its flagship product Trophy Lager in December 1978 with an installed capacity of 200,000 hectoliters per annum.
Following the increasing demand for its products, in December 1982 the Company embarked on an expansion programme to increase its capacity to 500,000 hectoliters annually. The company was listed on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange in April 1995.
In 2008 the Warsteiner Group sold its majority shareholding to the Castel Group and in January 2012 SABMiller Plc entered into a strategic alliance with the Castel group. During this period, significant investment was made which transformed the company and provided it with a solid foundation for growth and profitability. Starting with just two brands, Trophy Lager and Betamalt the Company has since 2010 introduced Grand Malt, grand lager, Hero Lager, Castle Milk Stout, Castle Lite, Redds, Eagle lager, Eagle Stout and most recently the introduction of premium brands like Budweiser.
In 2017 the Company through a scheme of merger sanctioned by the Federal High Court, merged with Intafact Beverages Limited and Pabod Breweries Limited (companies with similar objects) in other to provide for the optimization of efficiencies, leverage on economies of scale and ensure shareholder value creation amongst others.
This has increased our production facilities apart from ilesa, to Port Harcourt, Onitsha and Ogun State with corporate headquarters of the Company in Lagos.
In addition, the Company operates depots in Ibadan, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Benin and Ilorin to facilitate the re-distribution of its products in the wider urban area.

NASCON Allied Industries Plc (previously National Salt Company of Nigeria Plc) was established in 1973 as a salt refinery at Ijoko (Near Sango-Ota); Ogun State as a joint venture between the Federal Military Government of Nigeria and Atlantic Salt & Chemical Inc. of Los Angeles, California, USA, due to an identified need for self-sufficiency in the production of this essential commodity.
In order to achieve this, the Federal Military Government appointed Messrs Atlantic Salt & Chemical Company Incorporation as Technical Partner for the establishment of this company in October 1972; the technical agreement was signed on March 1973. The National Salt Company of Nigeria was thus incorporated on April 30, 1973.The equity shareholding of the company at the time was:

Former Western State Government 10% (Now Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos and Ekiti States)
The construction work commenced on October 20, 1974. Construction of the refinery was completed in December 1975 and erection of plants and machinery was completed in August 1976, with a total capacity of 110,00Mt. With the acquisition of controlling shares by Dangote Group, the average daily production increased to 600,000 metric tons per annum, with the inclusion of three refineries in Apapa, Oregun and Port Harcourt.
The production activity at the Apapa plant started in 2001 with the production of edible and kitchen salt in 25kg and 50 kg (bulk) sizes. The Port Harcourt refinery commenced production in 2003, while production at Oregun kicked off with the production of iodized table salt in 250g, 500g and 1Kg sachet sizes for domestic use under the brand names Annapurna®* and Dangote®.
*Annapurna is a brand name owned by West Africa Popular Foods (WAPF) as a joint venture between NASCON and Unilever Nigeria Plc.
By-products from the salt refining process include:
Fine (butter) salt (used in the production of biscuits and confection)
Granulated kitchen salt and industrial salt.
PRODUCT EXTENSION/PRODUCT LINE EVOLUTION
In 2014, the business expanded its product lines to further increase profitability in line with our long-term growth objectives. In 2014, NASCON took advantage of its leadership position in the production of specialized PDV salt, and expanded into the production of flavoured seasoning and stock cubes under the brand name Dan-Q.
Dan Q seasoning is presently available in chicken and beef flavour variants with plans to expand our flavour offerings in line with consumer needs and the demand for flavour variation.
Dangote Tomato Paste is a thick paste made by cooking high-quality organic tomatoes for several hours to reduce moisture, then straining them to remove the seeds, skin, and then cooking them again to reduce them to a thick, rich concentrate. We entered into this product category in response to an identified supply gap within the Nigerian market where local production plus imports have been unable to effectively meet local demand. We currently sell our tomato paste under the Dangote brand name.
Vegetable Oil: Also in response to the obvious supply gap in the market and the perennial shortage of vegetable oil, resulting in the influx of low quality grey imports into Nigeria, NASCON PLC in 2015 commenced the production and sale of vegetable oil as a high grade refined product for domestic and industrial use. For the moment, we avail the product in bulk to end users for the production in the food industry. We expect to expand into retail packaging in the very near future.

Transparency and Accountability
We are proudly Nigeria’s pioneer and largest Brewing firm. Our company was incorporated in 1946 and in June 1949, we recorded a landmark when the first bottle of STAR lager beer rolled off our Lagos Brewery bottling lines. This first brewery in Lagos has undergone several optimization processes and as at today boasts of one of the most modern brew house in the country.
In 1957, we commissioned our second brewery in Aba. The Aba Brewery has also recently undergone several optimization processes and has been fitted with best in brewery technology. In 1963 we commissioned our Kaduna Brewery while Ibadan Brewery came on stream in 1982. In 1993, we acquired our fifth brewery in Enugu. A sixth brewery, sited at Ama-eke in 9th Mile, Enugu was commissioned and christened Ama Brewery in October 2003. Ama Brewery is today the biggest and most modern brewery in Nigeria.
Operations in the Old Enugu Brewery were however discontinued in 2004. We acquired a malting Plant in Aba in 2008.
In October 2011, our company bought majority equity interests in Sona Systems Associates Business Management Limited, (Sona Systems) and Life Breweries company Limited from Heineken N.V. This followed Heineken’s acquisition of controlling interests in five breweries in Nigeria from Sona Group in January 2011. Sona Systems’ two breweries in Ota and Kaduna, and Life Breweries in Onitsha have now become part of Nigerian Breweries Plc, together with the three brands: Goldberg lager, Malta Gold and Life Continental lager.
In 2014, we got approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission and the respective shareholders of both Nigerian Breweries Plc and Consolidated Breweries Plc to merge the operations of both companies. The merger became final on December 31, 2014
Following the successful merger, we now have three additional breweries in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Awo-Omamma in Imo State and Makurdi in Benue State. The merger also brought an additional seven brands into our portfolio.
Thus, from that humble beginning in 1946, our company has now grown into a Brewing Company with 11 breweries, 2 malting plants and 26 Sales depots from which our high quality products are distributed to all parts of Nigeria.
Nigerian Breweries Plc has a growing export business which covers global sales and marketing of our brands and dates back to 1986.
